Nel corso del 2007 l'artista è stato borsista dell'accademia tedesca Villa Massimo di Roma. Dal 1985 al 1990 studia architettura del paesaggio a Dresda mentre sviluppava una ricerca al confine tra sperimentazioni in campo sonoro e quello visivo realizzando installazioni o eventi in cui mette in relazione le ricerche scientifiche, l'arte e le potenzialità dei nuovi media permettendo così una riflessione inedita sul concetto di astrazione geometrica e di riduzione dagli elementi del reale. La sua ricerca prende inoltre spunto da fenomeni naturali come il suono (di cui studia il rapporto con lo spazio, il tempo e il movimento), la luce, i campi elettromagentici (e in particolare gli effetti delle polarità) ed elementi naturali come il latte o la neve. Famose sono le sue opere attorno alle forme geometriche dei cristalli di neve, come le sperimentazioni con le frequenze video, o il lavoro sulle vibrazione del suono che attraversano contenitori in cui vi è l'acqua come alla biennale di Venezia del 2001 con l'installazione Frozen water.&lt;br /&gt;Le sue performance musicali, in cui Carsten Nicolai si presenta al pubblico con lo pseudonimo di ALVA NOTO, nascono da una campionatura di suoni ripresi dal reale con cui realizza un primo nucleo attorno al quale crea un sistema di eventi sonori autonomi ma a cui aggiunge l'elemento errore che provoca cambiamenti di suono e frequenza determinando così infiniti altri nuclei, infinite via di fuga, infinite soluzioni. Ed è appunto a quell'esperienza che si deve l'indissolubile intreccio fra suono e immagine che ne contraddistingue l'opera. Egli stesso, d'altra parte, preferisce essere considerato sound artist piuttosto che musicista. Agisce dunque sui suoni primari come uno scultore fa con la materia grezza, modellandoli e ottenendo così - anziché composizioni tradizionali - soundscapes: "ambienti sonori" naturalmente disposti all'associazione simbiotica con altri elementi.&lt;br /&gt;Ciò che Ikeda produce non è pertanto semplice "musica elettronica": si tratta piuttosto di stimolazioni sensoriali provocate dal ricondizionamento in formato binario di dati analogici, siano essi suoni - e sovente ultrasuoni ai limiti della percezione umana - o immagini. E in quel senso le piattaforme digitali su cui lavora non sono strumenti impiegati per ricavarne trame narrative, bensì l'habitat stesso in cui si ridefinisce l'identità di codici e linguaggi. Punto di partenza è allora, per ammissione dell'interessato, l'algido silenzio dei computer in stand-by, così come lo schermo bianco prima che le immagini prendano forma. Il corso, che comprende anche l'idoneità di base, ha la frequenza obbligatoria e l'obbligatorietà delle esercitazioni che verranno pubblicate. La valutazione espressa in voto, oltre all'idoneità di base, &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;verrà riconosciuta durante la sessione  d'esame previa presentazione di una "tesina" scritta di minimo 12 pagine e presentata in  formato elettronico pdf contenente testo e immagini, il cui contenuto  dovrà essere precedentemente concordato ed inerente agli argomenti del corso trattati durante le lezioni frontali. Questa procedura prevede anche una panoramica propedeutica di base per comprendere i software più semplici e freeware adatti alle esigenze di base.&lt;br /&gt;Come catturare uno screenshot.&lt;br /&gt;Come produrre un‘immagine adatta alla pubblicazione nel portfolio - o tesi - in oggetto, ma anche come produrre un‘immagine di output per la stampa in un catalogo.&lt;br /&gt;Come acquisire, comprimere - secondo algoritmi lossless e non-lossless - e distribuire le immagini e i suoni.&lt;br /&gt;Come condividere i contenuti prodotti attraverso il web mediante le regole del Creative Commons, in semplice html e/o nel web 2.0 rappresentato, ad esempio, da myspace, flickr, youtube, etc.&lt;br /&gt;Questa prima sezione è fortemente incentrata su una "alfabetizzazione" di base e dedicata però ai principali usi nel campo delle arti visive e delle arti applicate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:small;"&gt;Parte 2 &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:small;"&gt;Le macchine come "strumento creativo"&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:small;"&gt;Parimenti sarà un approfondimento della parte 1.&lt;br /&gt;Verranno illustrate le potenzialità offerte dalle macchine - hardware+software - nel campo dell‘immagine elettronica/digitale (statica e in movimento), del suono e degli aspetti live e offline.&lt;br /&gt;Verranno analizzati in breve i file - come "contenitori di un contenuto" - e le loro varie possibilità di codifica, atte alla condivisione - p2p o altrimenti detto file sharing - del contenuto medesimo. Sia mediante il web sia attraverso supporti rom e memorie allo stato solido (cd, dvd, flash card, etc). E come utilizzare e riconoscere questi supporti in base alle singole esigenze.&lt;br /&gt;La propedeutica del corso servirà come primo accesso alle "nuove tecnologie" e potrà essere approfondita nei corsi dedicati, ed in elenco, nel piano di studio dell‘Accademia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;L‘intero corso è dedicato ad una alfabetizzazione informatica ampia ma incentrato ovviamente in un ambito prettamente "creativo" sia esso inserito nel sistema delle arti visive o più semplicemente in quello che, ancora oggi, viene identificato come "arti applicate" (design, grafica, cinema, etc.)&lt;br /&gt;Il corso fornirà un abbecedario di riferimento giustamente ampio ma dettagliato, e sarà altresì incentrato sulla condivisione dei contenuti. Il corso è inoltre finalizzato ad apprendere quegli strumenti atti ad una rapida e precisa ricerca dei contenuti presenti nel world wide web, e fornire le basi propedeutiche minime per la corretta analisi dei dati - come fossero una sorta di carta d’identià - condivisi in files.
